It Begins

VANCOUVER – The Caravan Unlocked is all about connection. A few months ago, Shelagh Rogers and Sounds Like Canada planned to launch their new season with a cross-Canada tour. Obviously, this trip has been postponed indefinitely due to circumstances beyond our control. But Shelagh and two members of the Sounds Like Canada crew are still going across the country.

The idea behind The Caravan Unlocked is to connect CBC picketers across the country, meet with our listeners and to reach out to the community in all locations. We will do this by collecting audio stories and pictures from our listeners and employees on the picket lines in as many locations as we can hit. We hope this trip doesn’t last very long.

(Editor's Note: It lasted, of course, to the very end of the lockout...and beyond...Shelagh's Last Post was filed a few days after the union reached a tenative agreement with the CBC in early October)

My heart is with all of you. I feel like I did the day I quit smoking , lost! My friends are not there, the silence is deafening. But this demands from managment are a new trend, or not so new. Good luck.

Best of luck Shelagh, Sue and Natasha!

I hope beyond hope that you don't make it all the way to Toronto before we're allowed back in, but if you do - we'll see you on the line.

Oh my life is so lonely and different without the CBC radio. Also I have no where to find out what is going on in the country. It seems so sad. How desperately this country needs a national broadcaster. What has happened? I feel lost and as though Canada is lost.

CBC Radio and a few CBC TV programmes have been a part of my life for a long time - I didn't know quite HOW big a part till you were forced to leave us. Last year, I was diagnosed with a debilitating chronic illness. CBC loomed larger! All day long, on and off, CBC radio kept me in touch with the world, gave me a community and provided programming so far above that which I can find in private sector that it would be laughable if it didn't hurt so much. I'm going insane without you! I will do what I can to provide support for you and to point out the incredible short-sightedness of management to the people who count. But really, YOU are the people that count! May you return soon. I worry that listeners will have moved on and that permanent damage will be done. The CBC has been whittled away over the years. Now this! Intolerable. Best of luck!

The CBC "new management" wants temporary contracts to give them more flexibility. How soon can the contracts of these managers be terminated?? How can we get rid of them? They are taking a popular and successful media organization and wrecking it. They think that people should not have security. They think that people should not have benefits. Does the government, overseeing the CBC and its management, think this is good? If not, then why don't they step in and insist that the bargaining resume?

This new management team can lock out the heart and soul of the CBC, pleasing no one. How can we lock them out -- permanently?!

Just found this blog thru of all things my favourite gardening site.
I have been a devoted but quiet CBC fan for many more years than I care to think about.
You (collectively) are a greater influence for national unity than any and all efforts underwritten and paid for by current and previous federal governments.
You and your colleages keep me in touch with my fellow canadians and give me a sense of other regions eloquently, compassionately, intelligently and with humour.

It is only because of the incredible talent of those of you locked out that a radio network can play repeats for 6 weeks that keep us listening. Enough is enough; we need you back but on your terms.
